How to facilitate smooth formal portraits of extended family, immediate family, and important guests:
After the ceremony, everyone will be excited to congratulate the new husband and wife - right before heading over to the fun event you have planned next! We’ll need to gather those family and friends you’d like to participate in your formal group photos before they continue on.
I want to help you make this go a smoothly as possible. Even if your timeline differs from this classic schedule, many of the tips below will be useful to ensure a smooth formal photo session.
• Do the family portraits immediately after the ceremony (if your schedule allows)
• Email everyone who should be present, at least once, reminding them to stick around for the portraits immediately following your ceremony, or at the designated time.
• Designate someone you trust who knows your family & friends to be in charge of organizing people. That person can gather the people needed, direct them on what shots they'll be in, and then release them when they're done. It keeps things moving quickly, smoothly, and enjoyably.
• I recommend starting with the largest group first - that means B/G, immediate family, grandparents, bridal party, and any other special guests you’d like to include.
• Once the largest group photo is finished, we’ll focus on the immediate family (details below), and everyone else can go to the cocktail hour.
• I like to take any photos that include the grandparents before any parents or siblings photos, so they don’t have to stand around waiting and can relax sooner
• The bridal party photos are usually held last (if you haven’t scheduled them separately during the day). This is a good time to give your bridal party a 20-30 minute break while we work on the immediate family and special guests’ photos.
Below is a list of some must-have formal photos that I make every effort to get on your wedding day. You can use these lists as inspiration for any additional pictures you want me to capture.
