As you stroll from the San Diego Museum of Art toward Spreckels Organ Pavillion and the Japanese Friendship Garden, take in the spectacular architecture and vibrant flora.

Spreckels Organ Pavillion

A gorgeous photo spot that allows for a wide variety of photos - strolling among the columns, sitting near the steps. With greenery in every direction and creamy white stone, it will be easy to select outfits that stand out and look good against this backdrop. The late afternoon sun won’t be too strong since it’s partially shaded by tall trees, yet open enough to allow for enough light as the day comes to a close.

Designed in 1914 as a first-of-its-kind outdoor organ for public use, the Spreckels Organ Pavillion is the largest outdoor organ in the world. Its white and cream-toned gables and shaded walkway make for a unique San Diego portrait session location.

The pavilion is next to the Japanese Friendship Garden, making it a natural and easy stop during your engagement photoshoot.

Venture down the historic El Prado road to some of the prettiest, most unique photo spots in San Diego, all gathered in the iconic Balboa Park.

Fun fact: Dedicated in 1868 on 1,400 acres of land, Balboa Park in San Diego was the second urban park dedicated by city officials for public enjoyment. New York City’s Central Park was the first.

California Tower

Soaring above Balboa Park and visible from almost every angle through delicate palm tree branches, the 200 foot tall California Tower is covered with intricate carvings, colorful tile, and glass beads. It is a stunning mélange of architectural styles, including Baroque, Rococo, Plateresque, and Churrigueresque.

Japanese Friendship Garden

With 12 acres of foliage, bonsai trees, pathways, koi ponds, waterfalls, foot bridges, sukiya-style buildings, and stone arrangements, Balboa Park’s Japanese Friendship Garden is one of my favorite spots for couples interested in private, nature-filled photos highlighted by simplicity and serenity.

Fun fact: The Japanese Friendship Garden expresses friendship and cultural unity with its sister city, Yokohama.

Alcázar Garden

Designed to honor the Alcazar Castle in Seville, Spain, this formal garden is best known for its ornate fountains, vibrant turquoise, yellow, and green Moorish tiles and annuals all year-round. Stroll through the pergola, catching rays of sunlight between a long row of columns. It’s a peaceful place to sit under a palm tree or meander through the rows of hedges toward one of the many fountains.

Golden sunlight reflecting off the clean, cream-colored buildings provides a warm glow to your photos.

The San Diego Museum of Art & Plaza de Panama Fountain

Not to be overlooked as you stroll through the park, the Plaza de Panama Fountain is a fun stop during your engagement photo session at Balboa Park.

Centered on the Prado with the majestic San Diego Art Museum in the background, this historic fountain yields a wonderful, unique engagement photo setting. It is centered on the Prado between the San Diego Art Museum and Spreckels Organ Pavillion. The interior tiles mimic the patterns on the dome of the California Building nearby, bringing the architectural splendor of Balboa Gardens full-circle.
