Hemingway's Paris & Key West

Where photographers walk in Paris, and cool photo spots in Key West. Vanity Fair calls it, “Perhaps the most famous independent bookstore in the world”. If you’re not familiar with the little place, Shakespeare and Company was the local hangout spot for Lost Generation writers like Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald

Proposal at the Cherry Blossoms

Surprise proposal photography and engagement portraits at the cherry blossom festival are among my favorite ways to help you celebrate your engagement.

The cherry blossoms - sakura - reach peak bloom every spring in Washington DC, and after more than a decade of experience photographing couples and taking fine art photos here, I’m a photographer who knows all the best spots for beautiful lighting and iconic views to help you create meaningful portraits.

The best time to plan your surprise proposal and capture the moment you propose is sunrise or sunset. There are over 400 kwanzan trees around the Tidal Basin, and the west edge is where the magic happens! Wide-open spaces, low hanging branches, and fewer people.

How I took my favorite Paris Photo

This view intrigues me because of how much of Paris is captured in a tiny sliver. The magnificent Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre rises on its hilltop in the distance. And in the foreground, some of the iconic Parisian rooftops and windows. Behind the condensation on the glass, you’d normally see the Tuileries gardens. The colorful sky mirroring the clock face window adds color to the overcast, autumn day.

Looking at this photo on my wall makes me feel like I’m on top of the world, peeking out from my corner of it, ready to take on anything.

Best Cherry Blossom Photo Spots in DC

The best spots to take beautiful, iconic cherry blossom photos in Washington DC are scattered all around the Tidal Basin, and in clusters near some monuments and memorials. Most cherry blossom trees are located around the entire Tidal Basin, and along the shoreline of East Potomac Park, (all the way to Hains Point). From the north side of the basin, you can peek through the blossoms to the Jefferson Memorial. From the west side, you can watch the golden sunset light on the cherry blossoms and the Washington Monument in the distance, or have a picnic in the shade near the FDR Memorial. From the east side, you can watch the sunrise touching the trees along the west bank for a glorious morning. On the south side, you’ll stroll along the water’s edge and duck under low-hanging branches.

In-home Newborn & Family Portraits

More families are holding their newborn portrait sessions in-home due to covid, rather than in-studio. As your photographer, I take every precaution prior to your session and as I enter your home so you feel safe and confident during your session. The at-home atmosphere is a fun way to relax throughout your session and include a more personal touch to your portraits.

One of the many aspects of my work that brings me joy is documenting couples as they grow into families and witnessing their life journey. Claire and Roger welcomed baby Neven at the end of December; a wonderful and happy end to 2020!

Proposal and a Surprise at the Spanish Steps

Surprise proposals are one of the most emotional forms of documentary photography. They are wholly candid, and I love every second of it. If you’re thinking of booking a photographer at your proposal, read my post on my approach and aspects to consider when working with a photographer to take the best photos possible.

When Nihar called me a few weeks ago about his proposal to his girlfriend, Esha, he had every last detail planned; they would “meet some friends” at the Spanish Steps (a quaint, tree-lined space tucked away in northwest DC), where a bottle of Veuve Clicquot and a bouquet waited for their arrival. Esha beamed with happiness, and I was honored to have photographed those precious moments of the next stage in their life together. I was taking photos from far enough away that I couldn’t hear the words, but the expression on her face and how they held each other close said everything (and I didn’t wear waterproof mascara that day so …).
