A Serene Georgetown Proposal + Engagement
Rebeca & Taylor
WASHINGTON, DC
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I *love* photographing proposals.
I’ve been asked so many times if it isn’t nerve-racking trying to “get the shot”, and the truth is, no. This is because together, we’ll plan out your proposal details on time and exact location, including what your background will be and where you should stand. As your plans come together, I’ll offer guidance where needed to achieve the best lighting and nicest locations that fit your vision. I arrive early, and you aren’t left wondering if I’ll show up. Many of the couples I work with are not from DC, so we take extra care to ensure you know exactly where you’ll go and when, so the day of your proposal you’ll feel confident and happy. My style is candid; I’ll photograph your surprise proposal and let you live in the moment while photographing from afar. I won’t approach you until you’re ready. All of the happy, loving emotions immediately following a proposal should be left between the two of you for a private experience, and they also make for wonderful, memory-filled photos you’ll cherish for generations.
When Taylor reached out asking me to photograph his proposal to Rebecca, he had a handful of ideas about where it should take place. We had a lot of fun going over options and he finally decided on a quiet bridge over the Georgetown Canal, not far from the waterfront. He thought Rebecca might suspect he’d propose at the location of their first date, so he changed it up a bit to make sure she was surprised, and it worked beautifully.

“I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you.”
–Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Their Beginning
Rebecca and Taylor met as neighbors during 2020 lockdowns, and got to know one another on a picnic at the butterfly garden on the National Mall. They became friends, which blossomed into a mutual love and caring for each other. Taylor says even though he knew Rebecca had plans to move away, “we couldn’t help falling in love and let our relationship bloom without looking back.”
“We meshed together perfectly and I fell in love with how brilliant he is, his passion for his hobbies, his sense of humor, the fun we had together, and his seemingly neverending fountain of patience and willingness to listen before he speaks.”
– Rebecca
Their Love
Rebecca realized Taylor was the one when she was preparing to move to Chicago for business school; he was a patient, steady, calming force who offered encouragement and reassurance when she needed it most. Rebecca says she couldn’t imagine spending her life with anyone else.
“One day, early in our relationship, Rebecca asked, ‘You love me, don't you?’ Taylor paused, and realized she was right. He responded: more than anything. “That's become something I say to Rebecca when she's close by and just wants to hear from me.”
Rebecca describes their bond as being strong, lively, and patient.
“She's always finding new ways to make my life happier. And she makes me think of ways to make her life happier.”
–Taylor
The Proposal
Taylor organized a day-long scavenger hunt around Washington DC to all of their favorite date spots. They ended up in Georgetown, where Taylor kneeled on a bridge over the canal and asked Rebecca to marry him.
Working with a Photographer at your Proposal
Taylor found Lincoln Photography after browsing many different portfolios. “I liked Rachel’s approach to proposal photography and engagement photos. She also had a great approach to talking through how to pull off the proposal, which made me feel confident we'd get some great pictures from her work. On the day of the engagement, Rachel did a great job working with our plans and capturing our best sides.”
“I appreciated Rachel’s attention to detail during our session! I could tell that you noticed little things like errant hairs or unflattering angles and worked with us to capture beautiful results while maintaining candid moments.”
